Biblical Counseling in Knoxville, TN

WHAT TO EXPECT IN A COUNSELING SESSION

  • Safety — an emotionally and spiritually ‘safe’ environment in which to discuss hard issues.
  • Transparency — It is expected and necessary from the client in order to address the real issues, and it reciprocated by the counselor, who has learned much through their own struggles.
  • Practical Biblical Application — The Word of God is sufficient to address all problems. We’ll take a deep look at:
    • How the comfort and counsel of the Holy Spirit (whose biblical names are comforter and counselor) can guide the client to truth and wisdom that empowers overcoming.
    • Detailed explanation of HOW the Holy Spirit works in the life of the believer.
    • How the identity of Christ given to His followers because He is their true Father can reshape our perspective on ourselves, overcoming shame and guilt and encouraging us.
    • How to biblically manage emotions so that decisions and thus actions are based on truth instead of feelings.
    • And much more.
  • A Warm Environment — Sessions are held in the study of my home. It doesn’t feel like a ‘doctor visit’ or an ‘impersonal experience.’
  • Reliance on the Holy Spirit for Guidance During the Session — I pray and trust that the Holy Spirit is guiding my words in each session, ever conscious of His presence.
  • A Sympathetic and Empathetic heart — Everyone struggles. Everyone has regrets. Most everyone has learned from hard times. No one is ‘better’ than anyone else.

Areas I’m Most Comfortable Counseling

  • MARRIAGE ISSUES
  • Stress/Anxiety/Depression
  • Premarital Counseling
  • Addiction
  • Family issues, including helping parents design a plan for discipling and living purposefully as a family.
  • Specific parenting issues. My wife, Judy, and I have had 31 children through our home (bio, foster and adopted) and thus have a passion to help parents with strategy and crisis. I also love to work with unique family structures (blended, adopted, etc.).
  • Spiritual formation and direction for children, especially teens and young
  • Leadership. I have studied leadership intently for 41 years (since age 14) and I want to help hurting leaders by being a safe place to share their burdens, and developing leaders by sharing principles and practices I’ve observed.
